In addition to his credentials, I can see why in terms of the election Portman could be the nominee for VP.

Portman would very likely bring in the electoral vote for Ohio.

That is the same with McDonnell of Virginia-------McDonnell in the VP slot
would bring in Va. electoral vote .

The question s , if we were looking at this from the National viewpoint , e.g. of the NRC, are as follows:

Which state is needed to carry the most electoral votes?

Which state can carry for Republicans without the VP being from a given state?

Rubio is doing well on In Trade also --------and he is from Florida-------so the same questions apply there.

Portman
Rubio
