Lazy, pancreatic cancer isn't a single variety. No cancers are. That's why they are so hard to treat. As Steve Jobs said, he was lucky that his variety was not of the more virulent type. In fact, it was treatable with prospects for improvement at an early stage which he opted not to do. He didn't beat odds. He didn't even take the chances he had.

He got some medical treatment eventually which extended his life as expected. No "odds" about it. Individual cancer cells just do what they do. There are no "odds" about it. To the extent that you don't know what they are doing it's a matter of "odds", but picking 23 at roulette and winning isn't "See how smart I am, I beat the odds". It's just what happened as a result of how the little variables came out.
