RAND Corp estimates that 40-60% of the marijuana consumed in the US (somewhere around 5,000-10,000 metric tons/yr) is imported through Mexico.

But the harsh penalties for marijuana smuggling do encourage the cartels to bring in more profitable, more dangerous drugs like Coke, Heroin & Meth.
