<<Our earth and our atmosphere have become extremely small. This is NOT the universe we are talking about. It is only our TENT. Criticality may not occur for a hundred years--but whether caused mostly by us or natural change is IRRELEVANT. Fresh air and fresh water. Big corporations are buying up water even now! :-)>>
A couple of things. The speed at which the earth is warming in comparison to past warming spells is like comparing a snail to a jet plane and scientists do not know where the "tipping point" is. It is the speed of the warming and the correlation with CO2 that has alarmed scientists so much. Is it the warming of the deep ocean for instance that would make going back impossible?
March in the USA broke the all time temperature record by 8.6%. Imagine how many standard deviastions that is from the norm. which makes the probability of it being normal very low and then for the first three months 6% above the 1895 record.
2) 99% of the top atmospheric scientsts are very sure they are right, so we must be very agressive in mitigating AGW.
<<I believe people do have a brain and they can make a difference. A very unpopular attitude to take at some cocktail parties...>>
1) Sure, we have a brain but is was shaped by evolution, not god, so we are not rational by nature and so we are concrete thinkers by nature, but need to learn abstract thinking which is what it will take to save us.
Our brains our great at pattern recognition but terrible at figuring out probability. Our inability to understand probaiblity is why so many people buy lottery tickets, gamble in Las Vegas and do not believe in AGW.
2) We do not deduce things, we learn things. If we deduced things we would not have spent so many years living in caves. But people think they can just think correct thoughts without developing their minds with information and learning logic. They can't. No one can.
As smart as Einstein was, when he figured out relativity he not only knew all the physics in the world, but he had leanred to think in pictures and working in the patent office taught him how things work. In fact Einstein figued out that he needed to fill his brain with information and then eventuall the answer would pop out.
Which is exactly what happened. He thought about and studied light, electromagnatism and field theories for years. |
