SystemSoft Announces Complete System-Level Software Support for Intel Architecture Embedded and Hand-Held Computer Systems; MobilePRO BIOS and Power Management Software Now Supports Intel's Embedded Pentium Processor

NATICK, Mass.-- SystemSoft today announced that its MobilePRO family of system level BIOS, Power Management and system control software now offers support for Intel's recently announced Embedded Pentium processor. With the addition of MobilePRO support, hand-held and embedded computer system manufacturers now have the ability to use MobilePRO in embedded applications ranging from highly sensitive power management applications like point of sale devices, to highly computational intensive applications like hand-held PDA's and networked computers.

"Our MobilePRO product line has gained widespread acceptance with embedded systems manufacturers like Symbol Technologies, Telxon and Norand," said Jonathan Joseph, senior vice president of SystemSoft's Platform Products Group. "Manufacturers are taking advantage of MobilePRO's reduced memory footprint to minimize Flash ROM requirements in next generation portable devices, including smart cellular phones. With support for Intel's embedded Pentium processor family, SystemSoft now offers a complete family of system level software solutions for embedded computer manufacturers."

The widespread adoption of industry standard architecture in non-PC based environments has enabled improved time to market for manufacturers and has resulted in a wide range of new devices which require system level software products. These new devices include data collection and point of sale terminals, personal digital assistants, personal communications devices, smart cellular phones, dedicated hand-held terminals for vertical markets and integrated office equipment. Common features present in these devices often include PC-AT compatibility, battery power, PC Card slots, flash memory technology and pen input support.

To address the needs of these emerging markets, SystemSoft has modified its widely adopted MobilePRO system level software to include features demanded by the embedded and hand-held market place.

Key features of MobilePRO for the embedded market include:

Modular Code Design - Built on a highly mature core BIOS, MobilePRO can be easily modularized to provide only those features required for the target system. This allows the system designer to minimize memory footprint, thus reducing cost. Modular features include support for APM Power Management, Plug and Play, System Management Bus and Universal Serial Bus.

Complete Core Logic Support - Chipset adaptation layers from leading chipset manufacturers like Intel, Opti, Cirrus Logic and Epson are all available with MobilePRO. Additionally, due to its modular design, SystemSoft can easily develop adaptation layers for custom core logic and gate arrays.

Flash Disk Array Support - In the highly mobile world of hand held systems, flash disk arrays have evolved as a common means of providing rugged, lightweight mass storage. MobilePRO offers flash disk support for both FTL and FFS environments.

SMM Based Power Management & APM 1.x Compatibility - As a leader in power management SystemSoft has been a key participant in the development of industry standards for power management. MobilePRO provides full APM 1.1/1.2 support for the DOS/Windows environment and complete processor level SMM support for OS independent power management.

System Management through Keyboard Controller - MobilePRO offers support for a wide variety of keyboard controllers from Intel, Hitachi, National Semiconductor and Mitsubishi. Keyboard controller extensions for Pen and Smart Battery support through the System Management Bus are available.

Full Operating System Support - MS-DOS, Datalight ROM-DOS, Microsoft Windows and Geoworks GEOS operating systems are all supported by MobilePRO.
Easy Integration with Universal Serial Bus - As a principal architect in the definition of the Universal Serial Bus specification, SystemSoft has been actively integrating Universal Serial Bus support into all areas of it's product family. SystemSoft offers a full range of USB software products including USB BIOS support, USB peripheral device drivers and class specific USB client device drivers.

Integrated ROM-able PC Card Support - SystemSoft's leadership in the PC Card software market for mobile computers has enabled the development of a reduced footprint PC Card software product for the embedded market.
Requiring less than 10 Kb of memory, CardSoft for embedded systems allows for highly competitive features like boot from PC Card support.
