Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you made a profit on it.

A call is one of the risks of selling short, especially one as heavily shorted as AMZN. There is nothing you can really do about it. On a day like today I'm sure there was no voluntary covering. You might still luck out tomorrow though.

I wonder if it is related to options trading in some way?

I got to admit I sweated a little after reading this and immediately checked my accounts.

Does anyone know how they decide which shares to call when this happens? It might be based upon how long you held the position, I don't really know.
