there is so much about massachusetts i did not know. i saw grover norquist on squawk box monday morning, and he is from massachusetts originally. he said, much to my amazement, that mass has a state income tax that is a flat tax. he said it has been put on the ballot five times to move to a graduated tax scheme with the higher income people paying more. he said all five times the measure to change away from a flat state tax has been defeated at the polls by the voters. he said the voters know (think) if the rate goes up for some, it is just a matter of time until the rate goes up for the bottom rates too.

i did a search of mass state income taxes, and the text is there that mass has a flat tax. i think it is about 5.25% right now. it has varied over the years higher and lower. i was surprised. texas has a flat tax too.
