Between the three of us brothers, only one had kids, 3, and only one grandchild so far. I'm 60.

The Amish, whom everyone mocks, have high birth rates. The average family has 6-7 children. The one thing about agrarian societies is that they view children as assets because by 5 they can do chores and often stay to continue the farm. They don't need two income-producing parents, so moms are stay-at-home. Urban families see children as financial liabilities and they usually won't see a return on the expense of raising them, so they want fewer of them, and those with kids, both parents work.
