Gold is a technology like < horse shoes, swords and plough-shares > When you write "gold", you don't really mean random shaped nuggets and powder found in a creek. You mean gold shaped into various forms with various functions, with electronic systems wrapped around it for transactions. "Gold" in the sense it was used, and I'm sure a lawyer would be up on such linguistics, meant gold as used in monetary systems. Not as a replacement for horse shoes [too heavy and too soft], swords [it would attract too many other swords and be weak in response] or plough shares [too expensive, too heavy, too soft though with excellent anti-corrosion properties].
