Watching Ann Coulter on Bill O'Reilly last night was really enlightening. She is so into the Democrat vs. Republican labels that she completely misses the point. It's not about party labels, it's about ideaology, because idealogy and parties tend to change over time, as they have in the United States over the past 150 years. Saying that the racists from the south were all Democrats during the Civil War era and reconstruction is true on the face of it, but at that time the Democratic party of the south was a conservative establishment party. It was the "progressive" Republicans, led by Lincoln, of that era that made the changes necessary to end slavery. So really it was the reform minded progressive Republicans of that era that changed things for the better by getting rid of slavery and the conservative Democrats that represented the conservative status quo and racist views of that era that prevailed for many decades. But Ann Coulter never misses a chance to bash Democrats, even if they were the conservatives of that era. Funny how she can't give progressive thinking the recognition it deserves, even when it was Republicans who were the ones advocating it.
