Never worked for me in the north woods... nothing but DEET really works... at least in my experience... all those other things may be somewhat effective, but DEET is the only thing that gets me to shelter with zero bites... another "wive's tale" is the dryer softener sheets... I've been out in the wilds where some used skin so soft, dryer sheets, etc., while I used 100% DEET and I was the only one who didn't get bitten once.
