Sorry, but IBM is already a huge ISP (IBM.NET), which is standardized on US Robotics Total Control hubs. They have over 500 domestic POPs running x2, and over 900 POPs worldwide.

Insofar as IBM.COM being a buyer, it seem odd that they would have an interest in taking out Ascend after just having inked a major switching equipment joint marketing deal with 3Com.

I dare say that if someone is indeed accumulating, it's not IBM. Further, if anyone is in talks to acquire Ascend, they could not be a buyer due to insider trading laws. I agree that a buyout is likely, and still place Lucent as the most likely suspect.
