and you used it in front of someone of the racial group you were all against, and they didn't' recognize it, it would still be a slur. It would be an unrecognized insult, but still an insult.
If it's used by a group, it wouldn't take long for the offended group to recognize it.....

Their taking offense, doesn't make the word a slur.
If the target group finds it offensive, they have the right to say so as has been done with "Jap" and "Chinaman"....
