They are too strongly aligned, and have too many joint agreements to let that happen. There was a comment a few posts ago about IBM insiders personally loading up on Ascend. If true, then the likelyhood of an IBM buyout of Ascend goes to practically nill, since those insiders would be facing time in the big house.
