Well Kurt, I guess I should post something to you on this thread about NC's and my general feeling I came away from Comdex.

The definition of the NC varies depending on who I talked to.
The general concensous is that a NC is any computer that runs on a network which now adays could be any computer. The problem with this is that the computers don't have to run Java to be a network computer. At the NCD booth they had a NC and Winterm that basically was using the server to run the application. To me they are both dumb terminals and the NC is just there for show and has no real advantage over the Winterminal in its present configuration.

Now from my point of view the NC will leave the dumb terminal in the dust when it runs Java applets. Which leads me to my biggest unanswered question. Where was all the Java applications other than very simple programs that I saw on the Patriot Scienfic NC and Lotus had E-Suite running which looked similar to Corel Office Java.
Corel didn't have any applications either.

I couldn't get a good answer other than Java isn't mature enough yet. This leads me to speculate that Java must be too slow right now and or unstability problems.

It appears to me that Lotus will be the industry leader in the software area since IBM backs them they have big bucks and they were the only real Java software products at the convention. It also appears that IBM and Sun will be the lead companies in the NC hardware area.

JMHO
