On the one hand, I get that Romney is appealing to swing voters who voted for Obama last time. But he still has to appeal to his base. This will be a turnout election.

It is no use to insult Obama or suggest that he wanted to hurt America. That will turn people off. Romney's tone should be statesmanlike (let his SuperPACs talk about the not so nice stuff Obama has done). But he shouldn't say Obama is a nice guy. He should say Obama may have had good intentions, but his results have been terrible. It turns out you really do need to know what you are doing. "Good intentions" damns with faint praise.
