Hi steve, let me ask you a question about my situation. I was short 7 Nov in the money puts and long 7 feb puts (same strike price). I tried to cover (i.e. buy back) the Nov puts on Friday but for some reason the sale didn't go thru. I expected to find that the stock had been put to me this morning, but I did not receive any word so far. I am still expecting for my cheap brokerage firm to tell me tomorrow that the stock has been put to me. My questions: I would have a) liked to have gotten out of the short on friday when my sale never went thru (it never even showed up on the internet, so possibly I did something wrong, I don't know), b) sold the stock first thing Monday morning. The stock went down quite a few points today. How many days does the brokerage have to finally tell me the stock has been put to me? And then how many days do I have to sell the stock? (I don't have enough money to actually buy the stock so I must sell it). What happens if my brokerage house doesn't ever tell me about my puts. They were 5 or 6 points in the money when they expired on Friday so I'm sure they got exercized.
P.S. This is the last straw with my cheap internet brokerage firm. I am planning on changing firms. Are there any firms you would recommend who specialize in options in particular, spreads, naked options, etc. I can't find any firms who do so and also allow trades over the internet. For example, nobody has a screen to allow a spread to be placed over the internet to my knowledge.
