Inode, I don't want to belittle the significance of lower unemployment rates as the opposition party (in this case, the GOP, but back during the Bush years, the Dems) usually does.

But one of the big reasons for lower unemployment rates is because a lot of people took early retirement. That's reflected in Social Security, where the estimates for insolvency were brought in by a few years.
