Oh, indeed. We'd be going through the same basic cycle the Soviets went through ... with the same "freedoms". We'll be standing in line for three days to buy groceries, or a pair of shoes.
Ever see an entire grocery store with nothing on the shelves but canned tomatoes? I have. Why? The government-run 'system' to buy things wasn't exactly doing their job. Someone got paid a big bribe to buy a shipload of canned tomatoes from some country ... they spent all the available money on canned tomatoes, and other than the daily baguettes and for some odd reason, a surplus of eggs (??) which weren't sold at a grocery store, but rather at an 'egg store' ... all the food available was canned tomatoes in the government run 'coop' store. The country went over a year without black pepper. There was a period of months when no light bulbs were available (but, I drove some 8 hours to the border, and bought, literally, a Range Rover full.) ... Beef, when available, sold for about 48 bucks a pound... Strawberries were 32 bucks a kilogram.... Potatoes, which the country grew in abundance, were rotting in piles on the farms because the government run transportation union wouldn't go pick them up - and couldn't be found in town (about 45 minutes drive from the closest potato farms). My car battery dies, and I was told I couldn't buy one because the government battery factory was only making truck batteries, and wouldn't make car batteries for another 5 months .....
The citizens (subjects?) were only allowed to travel out of the country once every two years (but of course people in the government and their families could go as much as they wanted) and the normal citizen could not have 'hard currency' over any amount equal to $200, but all airline tickets had to be bought in hard currency. Families of ten to twelve lived in 2 bedroom apartments and literally slept in shifts (none available - government controlled all rental apartments except the ones the government officials or thier families owned, which they rented out for hard currency at exhorbitant prices - paid to offshore bank accounts, naturally) - any employee of the government or of a governmental entity, such as the national airlines could go to the top of the housing list ... people had been waiting literally years for bigger housing, and couldn't get it, but a newly hired ticket agent at the airlines went into housing within days of being hired.
So yeah, I've witnessed first hand just how "well" this socialism, 'share the wealth' crap really functions. For the life of me, I can't imagine anyone in their right minds actually wanting to convert to such a program, after seeing how good things can be under free capitalism. The 'wealth sharing' only works in the sense the government takes what they can take, but nothing ever seems to get paid out to anyone outside government.
No one can say that "our system" would be any better. No one can say we wouldn't experience all those same problems on a continuing basis. Once government gets a taste of being the sole controlling body of the country, it's like breaking a dog from sucking eggs to get them to change ... in other words, impossible.
So, yep, if that;s what people really want, let them vote for Obama, and find out that by the end of his next term, there isn't a choice because, surprise! He's decided he needs to extend his term to 8 years, and there are no national elections until 2020. Oh yeah, he's issued an executive order dissolving the States' constitutions too, and incorporating the States' governments into the Federal government. And, one has to be a member of the Democrat party to seek public office, and be sponsored by a member of the ruling federal government. Sounds great, huh?
If that's what people really want, then yep, let them vote Obama back in. I don't think anyone here wants that kind of 'government' .. so why won't they wise up and stop voting these flim-flam artists into office. There is no free ride at the expense of the "evil rich", and there is no free Rainbow Stew for dinner every night. Tonight, there's only canned tomatoes, baguettes and eggs,... and tomorrow night .... and the night after .. |
