The real sad part is that was only a few examples, picked out of nearly two years I spent there. I knew another American there who had done a tour in the Soviet Union previously, and he said this place (Algeria) reminded him a lot of the USSR with their consumer goods shortages, and completely inefficient way of doing things.

It's not like Algeria was a poor country - they produced quite a bit of oil. Their socialist system was just a nightmare, as they usually are. Added to the requirements of Islam ... it makes for a pretty miserable place, but even in a non-Islamic country, Socialism just does not work.

The best part? I actually volunteered for the assignment! My follow up to the Congo was actually much better in the way of creature comforts .. and who would imagine the Congo could be better than anyplace? LOL

Bottom line - these idiot progressives have no real idea what they are wishing for.
