To me, the appeal is that in a pinch, you have a full PC. I probably spend 95% of my non-working computing time on my iPad (mobile smartphone usage ons separate ledger). For the remaining 5% of the time, I still need to own a real computer. Occasionally, I do need to run full desktop versions of Turbo Tax or Photoshop, etc. Now, whether x86 tablets will be powerful enough to replace my PC is another story, but I will say that my main PC is 1st Gen netbook running Windows 7, so the performance bar isn't very high :).

As for installing programs, neither my MacBook Air or my netbook have optical drives, but I've managed to make do with a $20 USB DVD burner.
