Pierre I worked for over 35 years in the communications business and can attest to the fact that the majority of information even from insiders is at best questionable. How do you define sufficient investigation???

Very few people in any business sees the big picture, contrary to what they tell you. When it comes to analysts, the majority of them are little more than reformatters of information. Almost everyone was fooled by APM and WDC in the last 2 months. I correctly called it, got out of both stocks at a profit and than stupidly got greedy and jumped back in only to take the licking of my life.

There are so many factors involved that I have come to the conclusion that the only way to consistently make money at investing is to play the mathematical odds. I know from long term investing that even with extensive fundamental analysis, news reading etc, that 1 out of 5 stocks that I pick will be a total dud, one will take off like a rocket, and the other three will perform closely to what I had forecasted.

I have found in my case that checking the dud to less than a 10% loss, and being brutal about it is the answer to success.

For the first time I did not do it and lost 50% in APM and WDC. Will never let it happen again. Like slitting your wrists and watching yourself bleed to death.

In my case I was way ahead of the market so only learned a lesson and no damage done to my financial health (If you can say that losing $50K is no damage), but my pride sure took a licking.
