First movers can be good holdings when they beat others to market and take a large sales lead. OTOH, when they are just developing technology and don't have a sales advantage, these things are usually money pits where shareholders get diluted and suffer from poor returns. Many of these technology companies never enjoy robust sales.

WPRT is one I believe will fall into the second category. It may have excellent technology, but WPRT does not have the sales and may never have the sales. There are lots of existing engine manufacturers who already possess most of the technology and all of the economies of scale. If there is a lucrative market, these existing companies will take it. If there is not a lucrative market, they may let WPRT have the low sales niche and corresponding poor returns.

Capstone Turbines would be a good comp.
