There's a long history of the phenomenon of the apostate in Jewish history. The apostate is someone who cracks under the pressure of being hated, who is tired of war, who feels guilty for Jews not being 100% completely innocent of the hideous things they are charged with (even if they are only 1% percent guilty and 99% innocent). Such a man can relieve his psychological pressure by going over the to other side, by converting to Christianity in days gone by, or in modern times, converting politically from Zionism to Palestinianism, saying 'yes, Israel was born in sin. The Palestinians are in the right.'

The apostate of old was a figure of fear for Jews: he would be leading the next pogrom to prove his loyalty to his new friends. Maybe he would be promulgating the new blood libel about some Christian child the Jews killed to make matzoh out of.

The new apostate doesn't openly aspire for the death of the Jews. He covers that over with delusions of peace, conveniently forgetting what would have happened to the Jews of Israel if they had not won the war in 1949, or if they had let 600,000 Arabs return without any peace treaties with the Arab States or any way to check who was actually 'returning'. The new apostate may actually believe his delusions of peace. But it doesn't matter. He serves the same purpose as the old apostate: as a club to wield against the Jews, all the more effective because he can be called "the honest Jew", "the enlightened Jew".
