I'm not sure they always have to use 5 metals. The point though is that different ratios of elements produce different properties. The cooling rate is relatively swift so the atoms cannot line up in crystalized formations. All other metals (? pretty sure) crystalize when they cool which creates weaknesses.

Well of course no one knows what Apple is going to do. Full rounded back like the iPad, flat one piece back or, this new design I handn't considered: iLounge put out this speculative piece today. This to me is a credible design.

According to our source, Apple will make one major change to the rear casing, adding a metal panel to the central back of the new iPhone. This panel will be flat, not curved, and metal, not ceramic. Our artist’s rendition provides a rough idea of what this change will look like; it echoes the current-generation iMac design, to be sure.

It would eliminate broken gorilla glass in the most vulnerable areas, and being a simple (more or less) rectangle would allow Apple use LM without much risk, and to use LM for the other properties they crave:
- strength: more battery room, slightly less heavy - color - lazer etched Apple logo - no scratches
It would also allow Apple to get its iPhone 5 out soon, which is getting critical.
And it just "looks" right. It looks like an Apple design. |
