TPK, Wintek to see touch panel shipments for iPhones slip 15-20% in 2Q12, say sources

Siu Han, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 4 May 2012]
TPK Holding and Wintek are expected to see their shipments of touch panels for iPhones decline 15-20% sequentially in the second quarter, as iPhone 4S is moving into the final stage of its product life cycle, and Apple is likely to adopt in-cell touch solutions for its next-generation model, according to industry sources.

The adoption of in-cell touch, which results in the touch layer becoming part of the panel rather than an independent module, will mean that touch module suppliers such as TPK and Wintek will be no longer able to receive touch module orders for the next-generation iPhone, added the sources.

Due to a stock-pile of iPhone 4S and the effect of deferred purchases at consumers, TPK expects its revenues to fall about 10% sequentially in the second quarter of 2012, the company said earlier.

Meanwhile, Wintek has reported its revenues slid 11.4% on month to NT$9.29 billion (US$317.43 million) in April after its revenues hit a record high in March.

Combined shipments of touch panels from TPK and Wintek to Apple in the second half of 2012 will equal one-third of shipments the two companied shipped in the first half, the sources estimated.
