Essential? Google maps?

I'm sorry when I was a kid the family took cross country trips every summer, with printed maps. There were no Interstates, Route 66 was the way you got cross country, mostly two lane through 100's of towns There were no chain food places like McDonald's, there were no motel chains like Holiday Inn, you ate where the most truckers ate, cause the food would probably be good (and sometimes it as great). You stayed at places owned by real people, looking for a vacancy sign when everyone was tired. Some great, some fleabag, horrible.

Google Map essential? Food, shelter is essential. I don't even think Google Maps is very cool. I've got much better turn by turn stuff on my iPhone.
