The retail prices are hardly driven down because of government subsidies.

What gov't subsidies? Are they more than the alternative energy companies like Solyndra have received? I'm all for withdrawing any undeserved subsidies. But from what I've seen, thus far, a lot of accusations about subsidies in the oil industry don't seem to match the reality.

But maybe you mean like when the Clinton administration basically gave away the Elk Hills Oil Reserve to OXY (who Gore's Senatorial father used to work for, leaving hundreds of thousands of shares upon his death).. They are pumping oil at a cost of $1.50/bbl out of that reserve now. That's nearly a $97 dollar profit on each bbl.

And Bart Chilton of the CFTC is pushing to limit speculation it the oil markets that that prices more appropriately reflect global supply and demand.

All Obama has to do is support Bart Chilton's efforts. Or at the very least, threaten to release some oil from the SPR to break the back of the oil speculators.
