There was some footage of a young mother Lemur who's baby could not hold on weakened by drought, the troop presses on without her in search of water . If Lemurs get seperated from their troop for too long when they reconnect that individual may be attacked as a stranger , this is how strong the troupe instincts are & close contact at all times essential . The infant is too weak & lay on the ground & she's trying to lift it but now shes torn between two implulses , to stay with the troupe & safety leave the infant behind . She moves away from her young in direction of the vanishing group then back again to try & lift it once more , then away again several times this is repeated . If the young do not have the strength to cling on because of sickness , injury or drought its most often a death sentence, so after many indecisive moments back & forth she leaves the infant behind .

Lemurs are a lower primate but imagine this happening literally millions upon millions of times just in the experience of the higher primates & more intelligent herding groups like elephants that have been known to return to graves of their deceased after some passage of time . Innate base instincts are not something so rote in any creature's DNA that for the more highy evolved nervous sysytems it has become multilayered after 500mil yrs & more into many creature's unique advanced biology .
