Bangkok, Chiangmai - and most other places we visited - stunk. Literally.

Then never go to Jakarta.. LOL!!

Chang Mai wasn't that bad when I was there last April.. Of course, a lot of traffic, as you note.. But only in a few places did I catch an overwhelmingly offensive stench.. And I can find that in Times Square just as easily during Summertime..

But I prefer the Southern part of Thailand, since that's where the best scuba diving is located.

Malaysia was surprisingly clean. Not as clean as Singapore, but I thought it was fine with a lot of modern conveniences.

The amazing thing I found about Jakarta, K-L, and Bangkok, are all the HUGE malls.

People like to hang out there, if only for the AC and the cheap eats available in the food courts.

There is just an incredible contrast between old and new in many of these cities, and especially so in Jakarta. Spanking new high rise apartments and office buildings located next to broken stucco-roofed slums with garbage filled dirt streets.

And I've never seen traffic worse than Jakarta, although I guess Cairo and India would probably exceed it (and I have no desire to go to either).
