As far as veins splitting in 2 directions --> well let's put it this
way. DEEP undergroun the maximum stress (force) experienced
by rock is due to the wieght of the overlying rock. To relieve
this stress the rock fractures in a direction other than the maximum
stress (generally but not always). Coming closer to the ground
surface the direction of highest stress is "sideways" (or in the x-i
x-direction), thus rock fracturing direction changes. Thus, new
fractures develope as well. Veins are types of fractures. Fluid
travels thru the fractures and material is participated out thus resulting in the formation of veins. I don't know anything else about HGM though.
