Kevin: I enjoyed your YESTERDAY tune.
However, if misery loves company, then you should love the story I used to tell. The one about the entire DASD complex being wiped out by a Backup software package that was non-Y2K compliant in the portion of the code that automatically deleted all files that hadn't been accessed in 1 year. To rid the complex of unused data, of course, and to allow the delay of purchasing new DASD.
Not to worry, all the data was backed up to tape prior to the deletion from DASD.
Except that the Tape Management System (insert an appropriate acronym here) was also Y2K deficient and scratched all tapes that night. As part of the data center's security process, all scratched tapes are also degaussed (magnetically erased).
The guy in the degaussing center was curious about why the 7,000 tapes all showed up at the same time to be degaussed. But, heck ... he gets paid by the hour, so just do your job. Don't question authority. Fortunately, the degausser could wipe out 10 tapes at a time, so he only had to run the process 700 times. What a night that was!
Imagine his reaction the next morning when he expected to get accolades for degaussing a record number of tapes in one night. Instead, he was slightly less than pleased with the Data Center Manager's rampage.
