Panasonic Posts Record Annual Net Loss

BY DAISUKE WAKABAYASHI TOKYO—Panasonic Corp. capped a brutal year for Japan's consumer-electronics industry by posting a $5.49 billion fiscal-fourth-quarter loss, as its troubled television operations dragged the conglomerate to its biggest-ever annual loss.

Sony Corp. and Sharp Corp. also have reported record losses as the sluggish U.S. economy and uncertainty in Europe pressured sales of televisions. All three announced leadership changes and implemented restructuring plans.

Shares of Sony and Panasonic fell to their lowest level in three decades in trading in Japan as investors worried about their prospects. Sony's American depositary shares tumbled 7.5% to $1.16 in New York trading. Panasonic's ADRs slipped ...
