John, I agree with you that the incident of bullying itself isn't the major concern, but I think Klein lets Romney off the hook too easily, because denying that he even remembers the incident is reprehensible.
I took it that Joe Klein was trying to separate the two things I was trying to separate--his actions as a 17 year old kid and his actions today. I completely agree that his handling of it tells us much about Romney, none of which is new. It simply draws the lesson deeper in the sand.

I'm still going to stick with that dichotomy but as I learn more about the earlier incident, I might change my mind. Right now it looks like a lot of what happened in the 50s and 60s (and earlier) which was very bad but not necessarily a predictor of the adult.

To repeat, however, his handling of the incident now is very much about who he is.
