In my estimation, the difference between pitching the 7th or 8th in relief from the 9th, is that in the 9th you know this is it. If you make a mistake, the team can't make it up for you in the next inning. There isn't a next inning unless you blow the save without giving up the winning run.

A lot of guys can't handle that "this is it" pressure.

Football is a good example of that. Go into the 2 minute warning and it's like their brains are reconfigured. Everything changes. Ha!
