The guys over there, in Santa Clara, are probably watching the tape all the time :). The spectacular drop of the Nasdaq 100 index in the last hour of trading (from 8 and change gain at 3PM to 1.3 at the close of regular trading) was a cause for concern for short term long position and call holders. I am NOT speculating that INTC came up with this news to shore up confidence in the relatively weak tech sector today, but the coincidence is nevertheless amazing and it is quite unusual for most US companies to preannounce better than expected revenues/earnings. It is still a very welcome news and I wish more companies practice positive surprice preannouncements in order to ballance the negative ones coming from the likes of Zilog of National Semiconductor.
