Yes, the macro situation is dominating markets but the economy is not that rotten. The US Department has a nice recap of some of the key trends:

I follow the weekly bank fed data and rail data. Bank loans and deposits are doing ok for the 1st 5 weeks in the second qtr. Both are up 6.6% annualized. Credit continues to improve - ALL so far in the 2nd qtr is dropping at 17% annualized rate. Rail for the last few weeks (excluding coal and grain) is up around 3 to 4% vs. last year. I think we're getting close to a housing turn - markets will obviously rally once we have something positive to cheer about.

Difficult job evaluating key trends vs. macro worldwide risk. I'll put some of my cash to work at djia 12000.
