V.K., re:MSFT Directory Services

The current numbers coming from Microsoft on a directory service are late '97 (last date from product group) and "just before 2000" (date quoted by Mr Gates at TechEd. The current Domain that NT uses is called a directory (microsoft thought that calling their Domain a Directory would fool some people into buying). By he way, we'll have NT domain management (using NDS) out before the end of the year. And, Novell will have NDS on NT by the middle of next year.

Can I ask, where did you see Q1'97 (I'd be very suprised)? Did they say it would partition for low bandwidth use on the WAN? Did they say it would replicate for self healing redundancy? Did they say it was going to be open and extensible so people could add their own information and fields to it? Did they say it was tied to their WEB server and browser so anyone could get to the information they need? Did they say it had been tested on a large scale network? I hope they said all these things because that's what Novell's been shipping for over two years. Also, I hope they're ready for what they'll hear this week at Networld+Interop from Novell regarding all the new NDS features in IntranetWare.

Regards,

-Jon
