I'm confused. It has been my impression over the years that the trading price of an equity is determined by the number of shares being bought or sold. However, UPRO and SPXU do not seem to work that way. Both are plays on SPY, the first 3-times the long side and the other 3-times the short side. Both are said to seek to attain their 3-times objective on a daily basis (by some means I don't - and probably couldn't - understand).

As close as I can tell, the price of these issues are not set by buyers and sellers, so how the dickens does it work?

It's probably not an important question, but I'm curious.
