Michael Dell specifically mentions that "proprietary" and
closed systems make it difficult to configure and implement
a network in the best and most cost-effective way that
the customer sees fit.

"Just who was he taking post shots at?"

Not Novell or IBM or Compaq, that's for sure.

And I don't think it was Apple either.

Reading between the lines and paying particular attention
to his comment on the need for security and reliability, it
sounds like he might have been thinking about Novell.

When he spoke about the dangers of importing viruses
into proprietary software systems, that sounds like another
shot at the Active-X folks, our friends up north.
