Who had the worst week in Washington? GOP strategist Fred Davis.

Fred Davis had a Jerry Maguire moment this week.

Remember in the movie when Maguire (played by Tom Cruise) writes his “mission statement” outlining everything that’s wrong with the the sports agent business and how to fix it? He gives a copy of the memo to all of his colleagues — and is promptly fired.

    Davis, a major player in Republican consultant circles, penned a 54-page memo — not exactly a mission statement but close — that leaked to the New York Times this week in which he proposed a full-scale assault on President Obama’s connections to the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., his onetime spiritual adviser.

    Although Obama successfully cast himself as a “metrosexual black Abe Lincoln” during the 2008 campaign, Davis wrote, a renewed assault linking Obama to Wright would “dramatically reconfirm and increase the unease [an independent] has over Obama’s incompetence, his inability to focus on the problem at hand and his overtly political forays that make him look like he’s got something to hide.”

    Of course, what Davis didn’t count on is that someone would get a hold of his memo and leak it to the New York Times, an obvious attempt to a) kill the idea and b) embarrass Davis.

    Mission accomplished.

    Fred Davis, for writing the things you think but should not say, you had the worst week in Washington. Congrats, or something.
