We're seeing deflationary pressures finally taking hold. Look at the recent data out of China on electricity usage. That's not a very easy stat to fake (though I'm sure some there would attempt it). But shipyards are idle, and we seem to be seeing the tremendous real estate bubble there continuing it's popping. That's going to really hurt the Chinese people and potentially create political unrest. So if Gold and Silver stabilize here, while the USD continues to climb, it's going to be very indicative of where we stand on the financial front. Precious metals are definitely going to outperform the Euro if they can't get Pandora's box closed real soon. Those Europeans want cash parked in "safe havens", and I dare say that few of them believe that the Euro represents such. So I don't see how it's unavoidable for the USD to continue to climb (with it's ups and downs along the way). When it stops climbing, we should see a bottom in commodities, which may then represent a safe harbor.. But all the speculation and manipulation needs to be squeezed out of them first. But I think one thing that seems clear.. leverage is in this kind of market is a "no-no".
