I'm sure it's not.

Point-of-fact though... the US *was* a developing 'third word nation' throughout the nineteenth century. During which we experienced our greatest sustained growth rates, (and for the ENTIRE CENTURY we were a net recipient of inflowing foreign capital.)

As far as 'diversity' and the 'great American melting pot' goes though... I for one am fairly confident that that has proved to be a great American strength.

For an example to the contrary though I would point to the paralysis and economic stagnation in Japan... a good deal of which can probably be attributed to their lack of flexibility in labor markets and demographic stultification.
