aol was king. people paid $20/month. it had social, selling, news, stocks, your pwn webpage, ims, e-mail and much more. people paid others for broadband - and then, stopped paying for aol. so, myspace, ebay, yahoo, msft im, hotmail, gmail came along for free and aol became a minor player - even after you could get it on web for free.
