Been landing there since 1969.

Had to skeddadle out of there in the summer of 1969 because El Salvador and Honduras went to war and the airport got bombed every now and then. In 1969, went in on DC 6s operated by the Honduran national airline, SAHSA, a/k/a Stay At Home Stay Alive.

The Honduran Air Force's WWII vintage P-51s protected it then. It was fun watching them do aerobatics during the daytime - impressing the populace.

It's the approach to Toncontin that's really interesting; the landing is a big relief. Pilots now have to be 'Toncontin-certified' to be allowed to land there.

HK's airport is probably just as fun.
