Insurance is expensive, but still, a private doc - who is paying the same amount for insurance - will get paid - some times more, some times less, but let's say a 100 bucks for the visit. And that covers his overhead. If that same doc will see the same patient while moonlighting in an ER, the charge for the evaluation will be $8-900. And that's only the professional fee for MD services - the ER fee and other charges will be additional, going into the thousands.

I remember the days, in the 80's, when an ER visit was about $300 total, and a day in the hospital cost a similar amount - and people were complaining that it was expensive. But somehow, along the way, we have become desensitized.
