Could be the voters are just sick of having smoke blown up their asses by fast-talking, slick salesmen and opted for politicians who are more plain-spoken and to the point.

So, for example, perhaps they prefer Obama when he is speaking in his abbreviated black dialect rather than when he's trying to be a "constitutional law professor" [what a joke].
