I'm not a believer of using absolute statements like "will", "won't", "can't", "never, etc. But I will say this about Facebook. If they were to ever try to monetize Facebook through a subscription model for their in-place service ... it would surprise me to an unbelievable level. Again, monetization of a an audience of nearly one billion does not need to be direct from the service. It can be through indirect plays off of that captive audience. They already have the eyes ... now they simply have to partner, create and scale the model to work like it already is. They've accomplished the hard part already.
