"But we've got -- we've got deep divisions in the Congress between the House and the Senate, and that's complicated our ability to get these things done. And one hope is that when we win this election that there'll be a greater spirit of cooperation moving forward."-axelrod
The problem isn't "deep divisions". The problem is incompetent leadership at the top. The divisions were deep, but George Bush managed to get legislation passed -- often, by pissing off his own party.
When Ronald Reagan wanted to enact tax reform, which at the time, nobody thought could get done -- the WH drafted proposed legislation and sent it to Tip O'Neal and said, "let's get this done." And the two of them made it happen.
When Obama wanted to get health care reform done, he didn't propose shit. Harry Reid and a couple of other Democrats locked themselves in a room, drafted the legislation, then added components as necessary to get his own party to support it. Then, using a process that has NEVER been used to pass such sweeping legislation, signed into a law that passed with ONE Republican vote between both houses of Congress.
Do you think that doesn't leave an awfully bitter taste in the mouths of the other party? The sorry bastard, if you will recall, used the words "I won" to shut down any input from Republicans. That's not how you negotiate -- not by disrespecting your opponent. He poisoned the well, and it has rendered him incapable of running government -- even had he had the knowledge and skill to do it [he didn't, and never will]. The man is an incompetent failure and always will be. |
