Larry Summers (former Treasury Secretary) apparently found the relationship between gold prices and interest rates worthy of his time:

Interest rates are important even if gold isn't. I guess I find the concept that governments would expend resources manipulating gold about as counterintuitive as some of the intermediate term gold price action and some of the central bank actions that I've observed. I don't think you will find any satisfying answers either way, but it all seems much more mysterious than it should be. Perhaps complacency has biased our thinking on the importance of gold.
